Cable thieves kill broadband in Surrey neighbourhood

Cable thieves knocked out phone and broadband connectivity for thousands of businesses and homes in the Byfleet area of Surrey on Thursday.Described by BT as "a significant attack" and reported by thinkbroadband as involving a chainsaw and affecting 4,000 premises, the theft took place in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Openreach reveals pole and duct sharing costs

Openreach — a division of BT that deals with its infrastructure — has drafted pricing proposals for companies wanting to share its telegraph pole and cable duct infrastructure to deliver cable broadband to customers.The proposal, which BT stresses is still in its initial phase, is the product of industry engagement and sets out pricing for third-party access to BT Openreach's pole and duct infrastructure.

North Lincs village hit by BT copper cable theft

Hundreds of meters of copper cable were stolen in the North Lincolnshire village of Winteringham earlier this month, BT has said.According to the telco, the theft of more than 330 meters of copper occurred late on the evening of 15 September, and phone and broadband services were restored to local residents within two days.

Will 4G make our networks irrelevant?

Already in many emerging markets, cellular phones are far more prevalent than computers, driving many in educational technology to consider non-traditional computing deployments that leverage cellular technology instead of optical, cable, DSL or other data circuits. Korea’s fiber penetration reaches 12.2%

Korea had 12.2 fiber-optic connections per 100 inhabitants in June 2008, compared with 10.5 cable broadband connections, and 8.4 DSL connections. 35.3 mln cable and 29.7 mln DSL subscribers in the US in Q2 2008

The 20 largest cable and telephone companies added a net 887,000 high-speed Internet subscribers in Q2 2008, according to Leichtman Research Group. Cable companies now have 35.3 mln broadband customers, compared with 29.7 mln at the phone companies. My neighbors in Woodstock, NY, aren’t wired for cable or DSL, so I figured I’d extend some country courtesy and wirelessly share my cable connection.
