CES 2010: Manage your Chevy Volt with your smartphone and OnStar

We are seeing more and more mobile applications that extend the functionality of your daily life and one of the coolest ones I caught a glimpse of at CES 2010 was the new OnStar application for the Chevy Volt that is available for Android, iPhone, and BlackBerry devices. OnStar Mobile lets owners communicate with their car and perform functions such as door lock/unlock, remote start, view charge status, view stats on vehicle usage (mpg, trip miles, etc.), and set charge reminders.

Can Palm and WebOS make it through 2010?

Palm stole the spotlight at CES 2009 with the announcement of their Palm Pre and WebOS operating system and Palm fans rejoiced. It hasn't been as successful in 2009 as was hoped and in October their stock was down again, 20%, with limited Palm Pre availability and slow rollout of applications. I personally do not have a lot of confidence in Palm getting past 2010 without rolling out updated WebOS devices on other carriers. Do you think Palm can continue and succeed with the WebOS?

Palm WebOS is all about the Mojo

The excitement surrounding the Palm Pre and WebOS announcements is still quite high and is definitely the talk of CES 2009. Today, Palm posted some details on the Mojo application framework that developers will be able to use to write applications for the new device and OS. The hardware of the Pre is nice, but others have outstanding hardware as well. The success of the Pre and Palm comes down to the user experience, services, and developer support.

CES2009: REDFLY PC software coming soon, concept demos of dock and Android driver shown

My new REDFLY C8N arrived today and I was also pleased to get some news about some of the things that Celio Corp is showing off at CES 2009 in Vegas. Celio Corp unveiled their new PC software that lets you use your Windows Mobile device with your Windows PC just like if you had the REDFLY hardware. They also are showing off two proof-of-concept ideas that include a Smartphone Dock and Google Android drivers for the REDFLY. Keep in mind these are ideas under development and Celio Corp is just showing off how their driver concept can be applied to other applications.

Sunday night is Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates' big hurrah: His last Consumer Electronics Show (CES) keynote as Chief Software Architect.Gates is expected to talk about future scenarios for the Microsoft Surface platform as part of his keynote address (according to an e-mail message I got from the Surface team):"Since you last saw Surface, a lot has changed – there are new applications and a great deal of momentum.

Rich Internet Applications at CES

There were a couple of things coming across the news at CES that caught my eye. One was the Windows Home Server which I think opens up some new opportunities for RIA developers who want to take advantage of the living room. The second was Yahoo's Go for Mobile which is another example of how a rich, tailored experience can bring the best of the web and make it more usable.
