Analysis: Dell gets datacentre networks with Force10

Dell is broadening its portfolio as part of its bid to join Cisco, HP, and IBM et al as a major supplier of a top-to-bottom (or end-to-end as Cisco calls it) supplier to the datacentre, with the acquisition of Force10 Networks, a datacentre switch vendor.After Dell's acquisition of Perot Data Systems in 2009, which brought consultancy services, this move upmarket started in February 2010 with the acquisition of Kace, a small manufacturer of systems management boxes.

Climate Savers: Network gear next in quest for tech energy efficiency

There's a new study out today from Climate Savers Computing Initiative, the organization made up of several heavyweight high-tech companies focused on thwarting climate change and improving the energy efficiency of computing and communications technology. Those companies include the likes of CSC, Cisco, Dell, Google, HP, Intel, Juniper Networks, MIcrosoft and the non-profit group, the World Wildlife Fund.

Cisco Systems is the undisputed leader in the networking space, but HP has acquired 3Com in an effort to close the gap. In addition, Juniper Networks is a strong No. 2 to Cisco among telecommunication firms and enterprises. With video consumption set to explode, networking requirements will boom too.

Cisco fills Mac Uni's Nortel gap
