AWS: Enterprises slow to reap big data benefits

Small start-ups have taken a lead on enterprises in their adoption of big data, by embedding analytics into the heart of their applications, according to Amazon Web Services.As the cloud has grown, prices for rentable computing power have come down, while scale-out applications like Hadoop have evolved to analyse large quantities of data, Werner Vogels, Amazon Web Service's (AWS) chief technology officer, said in a keynote speech at the AWS Summit 2012 in London.

Skype plans London hires for development

Internet telephony service Skype is set to hire 400 people in five cities across the world, with a quarter to be based in London.Microsoft-owned Skype plans to take on 100 employees in London to support the launch of a new technology centre, the company told the BBC on Wednesday.

Amazon Web Services brings Direct Connect to UK

Amazon Web Services has brought its Direct Connect technology to the UK, which allows customers to establish a dedicated network connection between their datacentre and the local Amazon Web Services facility.The announcement, made on Wednesday, means UK customers can connect to Amazon Web Services' EU West (Ireland) region via the Telecity Sovereign House datacentre in London at guaranteed port speeds of 1Gbps or 10Gbps.

Symantec has released a new version of its Enterprise Vault email and content archiving product that makes it easier to scan Microsoft Exchange emails and metadata for potential data leaks.Enterprise Vault 10, announced on Monday, integrates Symantec's data loss prevention technology so email content and metadata can be flagged for compliance review, while also being automatically classified and assigned the correct archiving and retention policy.
