Going Hybrid: the old new form factor for Windows 8

It's just over a week since the Windows 8 Release Preview hit the download streams, and it's certainly been an interesting week for the Wintel ecosystem, with a whole raft of new form factors and devices announced at this year's Computex. Ultrabooks look here to stay (even if Apple has taken a patent out on the thin wedge form factor they all seem to be using), and this year's new trend is the hybrid PC/tablet.

Run virtualized Snow Leopard and Rosetta on Lion?

Some Lion users miss their older Rosetta-dependent applications, which didn't make the cut in the latest Apple OS upgrade. However, a recent tip says that with a little effort — a download or two — it is possible to run Snow Leopard, the Rosetta Power-PC emulation libraries, and your older apps on a Lion machine.

Hands-on: Twitter comes to the Zune HD, Facebook should be next

I am extremely pleased with my Zune HD (see my hands-on) and have been enjoying the 3D games provided last month by Microsoft. We were told that more apps, such as Twitter and Facebook, would be coming to the Zune HD and true to their promise Microsoft released the Twitter app today. Visit the Zune Marketplace on your Zune HD or PC to download the new application.

New Epic 3D game engine toolset: Fabulous, fun, and free!

This is big: Epic Games just announced the release of the Unreal Development Kit (UDK), a free edition of the Unreal Engine 3. This is the same technology behind popular PC and console games such as Gears of War, Unreal Tournament, Bioshock, and Medal of Honor. Now anyone can download the PC version of the UDK and immediately try it out without paying a cent.

Zune HD games, sponsored by the Kia Soul

Microsoft has stated that apps like Twitter and Facebook will be released for the Zune HD before the end of the year, but at launch you will find 2 apps and 7 games available for you to download from the Zune Marketplace. These apps are not preloaded on the Zune HD so you will have to load them from the Zune via WiFi or onto your PC and then sync to your Zune HD. Microsoft has stated that the apps are free and future apps are planned to stay free, but as you can see in my video below the games available so far are all ad sponsored. This may impact the user wanting to play the games to have to sit through an ad every single time it is launched and I think people would rather pay 99 cents for the game instead.

Sony eBook Store version 3.0 software now available for Apple and Windows

I was just reading my friend Lisa's first thoughts and video of the Sony Reader Touch Edition (PRS-600) and saw she mentioned the new Sony eBook Store 3.0 software would be available this Thursday or Friday. Well, Sony surprised us with an early release and if you go visit the eBook Store download site you will find both Mac and PC downloads for the latest 3.0 version. I downloaded it onto my MacBook Pro and downloaded all of my purchased content to my MBP too since I like to burn a backup DVD of my purchases.

Hands on with the Windows 7 Touch Pack

Last month I had a chance to see a quick demo of Microsoft’s new Touch Pack for Windows 7. This collection of a half-dozen multi-touch-enabled programs won’t be available for download by Windows buyers. Instead, Microsoft plans to allow PC makers to load it on touch-enabled PCs that pass Microsoft’s logo testing. Yesterday I finally got a chance to try the Touch Pack for myself. Here's how it worked.
