Yahoo's Bartz: "No comment" on Microsoft deal (but maybe a hint)

updated: Yahoo's earnings announcement - the actual financial numbers, that is - seems to be more of a formality these days. In a call with analysts today, CEO Carol Bartz made references to outsourcing or partnering pieces of Yahoo's business as the company rethinks its strategy under her leadership.

RightNow comes home strong

While the focus in enterprise applications is on a landscape laden with doom, RightNow, an on-demand CRM vendor ended 2008 strongly, ahead of guidance. On the earnings call, CEO Greg Gianforte was understandably upbeat asserting that (via Seeking Alpha transcript):First, our land and expand strategy has been allowing customers to experience the benefits of RightNow solutions in a low-risk/ high-reward approach before they spend millions of dollars from those.

Motorola picks Android in mobile phone shakeup. Ammunition for smartphone war?

Motorola is tapping Google's open-source Android operating system to inject new life into its struggling mobile phone division, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal. The company is expected to lay out its new strategy, which could involve laying off thousands and scrapping phone designs that are already in production, when it reports quarterly earnings later this week.

Staff cuts were announced at Yahoo's third-quarter earnings call last month, but the exact number has not been made public.

TAIPEI -- Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HWP) said on Saturday it planned no change in strategy for Taiwan following a powerful earthquake on the island which it has said would dent its fourth quarter earnings. "While it (supply chain) is disappointing in the current quarter, we do not intend to change our (Taiwan market) strategy," Hewlett-Packard chief executive officer Carly Fiorina told a news conference.

NBC Internet issues profit warning

NBC Internet said late Monday that it will report lower-than-expected sales and earnings in its second quarter and throughout the rest of the year due to sluggish online advertising sales and costs associated with the revamping of its business operations. In announcing what it called "major refinements" to its business, product and branding strategy plans, NBCi (nbci) said it had $700 million in cash and NBC promotion credits at its disposal to weather some tough months and quarters ahead.
