GNOME's Sandler: Is there a killer in the code?

Is there a killer in the software code running millions of medical devices? GNOME Executive Director Karen Sandler, formerly of the Software Freedom Law Center, has been fighting to get this software opened up for inspection and review since she received her own implanted defibrillator in 2008. The FDA and Supreme Court have been no help. She recently shared her journey at OSCON 2011.

Experimenting with Alternate Desktop Managers

I have been recently been looking into desktop managers other than Gnome and KDE. Of course, there are Ubuntu distributions with different desktop managers, including the "standard" Gnome, Kubuntu with KDE, and Xubuntu with Xfce.

Torvalds dumps KDE for Gnome

Ticked off at the latest revamp of KDE, Linux progenitor Linus Torvalds has switched to GNOME. Apparently he thought KDE 4.0 was a "disaster" and "half-baked". Harsh words indeed.

Portland, the software, is a set of common interfaces for GNOME and KDE, the leading desktop Linux GUIs. Debian, Fedora, OpenSUSE. Red Flag and Xandros are all going to ship Portland with their next releases.

Murdock has penned in more market cap than Microsoft has, and is building something solid on that base that applications can be written to, regardless of distribution or user interface. Write your program to the LSB, in other words, and it will run on Novell or Ubuntu, under KDE or GNOME.
