I've written about TouchDown for Google Android in the past and it is one of the best priced apps I have purchased for my T-Mobile G1. I actually popped my SIM card in my G1 yesterday morning and discovered there was an upgrade to TouchDown that brought it up to version 3.x. I then received an email from the company with all the details surrounding this latest upgrade. As I mentioned before in my TouchDown articles, the NitroDesk Inc. people have been regularly updating the application to make the Exchange experience better and better for Google Android devices.
At the Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco, Palm Senior Vice President of Applications and Services Michael Abbott announced an early access program of the company's new developing platform, WebOS. The new platform will run apps natively on the device and enables greater integration with cloud applications like Google and Facebook. Abbott stressed that the company is looking for developer feedback and that the platform is evolving.
Google is putting the beta label back on some versions of its Chrome browser - well, sort of. The company said today that it's re-introducing the beta channel so it can get some feedback from people who are willing to be guinea pigs for new features.
I've written about TouchDown for the Google Android a couple of times (here and here) and as I have said in those posts it gets better and better on a regular basis. I have been using beta versions and the latest available beta supports PUSH email, ability to send attachments, device-local drafts, and more. The folks at NitroDesk, Inc. were able to sign a licensing agreement with Microsoft to support direct push capability through Exchange ActiveSync. I think this is one of the first products for the G1 that provides this functionality, even though a couple others are working on it as well.
Obviously Google is scrambling to undo some PR damage caused by this week's Apps outage. I certainly received some negative feedback on my proclamation of continued faith in all things Google and willingness to roll out their Apps for Education, regardless of the problems.

It isn't a surprise that Google bid on spectrum in the FCC auction for the 700mhz spectrum, however I found the name it filed under interesting -- Google Airwaves Inc. There has been speculation that Google and Apple entered the auction together, and maybe this is the reason for incorporating a separate company on November 26th.
The Open Handset Alliance, a group that includes Google, Motorola, Sprint, T-Mobile and others, on Monday released the Android software development kit (SDK).The alliance notes that the Android SDK is an "early look" designed to allow developers to provide feedback about the platform (see statement).
I am listening into the conference call between Google, T-Mobile, HTC, Qualcomm and Motorola where the Open Handset Alliance and Android open source platform was announced. Eric Schmidt, Chairman and CEO of Google Inc., Andy Rubin, Director of Mobile Platforms, Google Inc., René Obermann, CEO of Deutsche Telekom, parent company of T-Mobile, Peter Chou, CEO of HTC Corp., Paul Jacobs, CEO of Qualcomm, and Ed Zander, Chairman and CEO of Motorola, Inc. made the announcement together and discussed their companies involvement in the new endeavor. The Open Handset Alliance, composed of 34 companies, is quite a departure from the standard for the U.S. wireless business and will have significant impacts across the world.
