Google allows bigger, faster Cloud SQL databases

The company has updated its Cloud SQL service, increasing the maximum size of databases tenfold and the maximum size of instances fourfold. Users can also now choose whether they want their database stored in a US or EU datacentre.

Google offers Wi-Fi database opt-out method

Google has delivered a way for people to opt out of having their wireless routers mapped by the company's Street View cars, as it was ordered to do by European data protection authorities.The company’s privacy chief, Peter Fleischer, wrote in a blog post on Tuesday that those wishing to opt out would have to rename their home wireless network, or SSID, so that it ends with the suffix '_nomap'.

Google has pleaded with the UK government to open up back-room discussions about website-blocking to the public and parliament.For months, communications minister Ed Vaizey has been in talks with communications providers, rights holders and various other interested parties to explore the viability of blocking access to websites that, for example, facilitate copyright infringement.

Google Patent app describes efficient database storage of Google Maps, Google Earth objects

A new Google Patent application entitled Ranking and Clustering of Geo-Located Objects appears to describe a method in which geographical location objects of the type seen in Google Earth and Google Maps would be more efficiently classified in a database.This is potentially very helpful for third-party licensors of Google mapping tools, and perhaps even for power mashers who work with these utilities.
