HP Pavilion dm1-4010ez - Installing Cinnamon

My lovely new HP sub-notebook is now happily running Linux Mint 12, and dual-booting Windows 7 Home Premium, as explained in the previous post on this subject. The desktop is Gnome 3 with the Mint Gnome Shell Extension (MGSE):I will note here that although this has been the standard desktop in Mint 12, and it is certainly more comfortable to use for those who are accustomed to previous Mint (and Gnome) releases, it is not without its drawbacks and unpleasant side effects.

Good news - the latest Oneiric daily build includes support for the Ralink 5390 WiFi adapter in my HP Pavilion dm1-3105ez. I can't tell yet if this is a result of the version of the Linux 3.

How Linux saved my computer from Windows Update

If it wasn't for Linux, a Windows Update crash would have forced me to format my drive and reinstall everything. On Friday I got home from work, powered up my HP Pavilion DV6 6055ea laptop and watched as it promptly shut down to churn through Windows Update.

Samsung N150 Plus Netbook - Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.04

The obvious first choice in loading Linux on my new Samsung netbook is the Ubuntu Netbook Edition. This should be particularly well-suited, because UNE was originally developed specifically for Intel Atom based netbook, and although it has been improved over the past couple of releases so that it works on others (such as my HP 2133 Mini-Note), I believe that it still works "best" on Atom-based systems.

Lucky Number Seven (7th Linux Distribution on an HP 2133)

Following my recent post about Six Linux Distributions on an HP 2133, I saw a comment saying that I had not tried Jolicloud. Absolutely correct, I don't really have Jolicloud fixed in my mind yet, in part because I don't use it on any of my own systems, and in part because their release name/numbering system rubs me the wrong way.
