Trek Technology, a maker of thumb-sized storage devices, has fired off a warning letter to Japanese electronics maker Sony over alleged patent infringement. ThumbDrive is a portable, removable storage drive with Universal Serial Bus (USB) connectivity. Since its debut more than two years ago, the device has been licensed by multinational firms such as IBM and Sonnet Technologies, a Macintosh processor upgrade provider. Panasonic, the consumer-electronics powerhouse, has invested in embedded Linux seller MontaVista Software. MontaVista produces versions of Linux and associated programming tools for non-PC computing devices such as network routers, handheld computers and automatic teller machines. Sunnyvale, Calif.-based MontaVista announced the investment Tuesday, but didn't disclose how much Panasonic is investing. MontaVista announced a $28 million investment in January from Sony, IBM, and previous investors including U.S. Venture Partners, Alloy Ventures, Intel Capital, RRE Ventures and WR Hambrecht. Sony will delay the release of its CIMV PictureBook from the fourth quarter of this year to January 2002 due to shortages of Transmeta's 5800 Crusoe processor, a Sony representative said Monday. The Crusoe processor has been delayed because of difficulties associated with producing the chip in large volumes.
