ePals launches ePals China

I first covered ePals almost three and half years ago, highlighting the emerging safe social network and email-based collaboration tools for K12 students. Since then, we've seen them roll out a full-featured social learning platform, layer their role-based communications tools on top of Live@Edu (now Office365 for Education), and finally raise $23 million in an IPO on the Toronto Stock Exchange in August.

Xobni Gadgets

Last year Hotmail introduced what it calls 'dynamic' email tools; if you get a message with links to photos, videos, office documents, parcel delivery status or a few other useful things, you see them live in your email — thumbnails of the images instead of links to online photo sites, a player for video links, whether your parcel has been delivered already. Xobni's new gadgets bring something similar to Outlook — but for rather more services — based on OpenSocial.

Too slow, Firefox, too slow

Of late, many of my organisational computational tools are online (Google Apps for company email, contacts, calendar and presentations; WordPress, Eventbrite, MailChimp, Google Analytics, bit.ly, Vimeo, and DreamHost panel for my website; Remember The Milk todo manager, NetVibes feed reader, online banking, Flickr for my blog… you get the idea).

VMware updates Zimbra collaboration tools

VMware has launched Zimbra Collaboration Server 7 — an open-source suite of collaboration tools that support email, group calendars and document sharing — which the company says provides better tools for both casual and power users.

Xerox unveils remote printing tools

Xerox has announced new tools for those who want to print documents from their mobile phones or other email-enabled devices.The company's Mobile Print Solution (XMPS), which will become generally available in early 2011, will let people securely email their files, such as Microsoft Word or Adobe PDF files, to their firm's private server, from which XMPS will send a confirmation code back to the user.

MindManager 9

Mind mapping is one of those techniques that a lot of people might find useful but that's never really become mainstream. Version 9 of Mindjet's £199 MindManager tools adds better integration with Office, especially Outlook, and (optionally) SharePoint to make it fit better into the way most of us work with documents and increase the chance that people might draw up a mind map rather than dash off an email.
