Where Apple's 'New iPad' technology falls short

More details are emerging about Apple's third iPad as teardown specialists analyse the parts, and it's beginning to look like a bit of a stopgap product. The pre-launch speculation provided a pretty good idea of the improvements that Apple would introduce, mainly a "retina" display screen, a faster processor, support for 4G mobile networking, and possibly the voice-driven Siri assistant.

Craigslist has decimated a valued profit center in the world of printed newspapers. Printed books have given way to Kindle readers on every street corner. Glossy magazines are desperately trying to find new life in interactive iPad editions. Meanwhile, most specialty trade and technical publications long ago felt the need to jump to the Web. And now, despite almost of decade of Britannica's experts screaming into the wind that Wikipedia wasn't a legitimate source of educational information, Britannica's storied 244-year-old print edition gives up the ghost, due in large part to the existence of Wikipedia. Walmart brings support for streaming video service Vudu to iPad, hopes it works out better than its MP3 store

Walmart has struck out battling digital music rivals, but the company hopes it has more success with Vudu, the online video service that it purchased in 2010 to compete against Netflix and iTunes. Already available on the PlayStation 3 and connected HDTV and Blu-ray players, Vudu is finally catching up to the competition by adding support for the iPad today.

EC asks for suggestions on dealing with roaming rates

The European Commission has launched a consultation on its regulation of mobile roaming rates.The cost of using a mobile phone for voice or data services while travelling in Europe has dropped significantly since the regulation was introduced in 2007, "the target set by the Digital Agenda for Europe is that the difference between roaming and national tariffs should approach zero by 2015", the Commission said in a statement on Wednesday.
