Zamzar launches free file conversion via email

The Zamzar website, which converts files between formats, has launched a new service: it will now convert files submitted by email. This could be particular useful to smartphone users who are often emailed files that their device is unable to display.

Latest iPad 3 rumor: LG, Samsung will build its screen, not Sharp

Just a few weeks ago, it looked like Sharp had won the right to supply Apple with the LCD panels for the forthcoming iPad 3, but a Korean website is now reporting that LG and Samsung will be the providers of what it is rumored to be a higher-resolution screen.According to the Electronic Times Internet, Sharp was unable to pass muster with Apple over mass production issues.

Adobe releases Reader for iOS

Adobe has put out a version of its PDF reader software for Apple's iOS, addressing devices including the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.The free and fully-featured Adobe Reader hit iTunes on Monday, allowing users to read PDF portfolios and password-protected PDF files.

iOS LogMeIn Ignition update adds file-system access

An update to the LogMeIn Ignition app for iOS devices, such as the iPad 2, iPhone 4 and iPod Touch, now allows users to perform file-management tasks, in addition to remotely accessing the desktop of other computers.The new version of the iOS app allows users to directly access a computer's file system to view, move, edit, or copy files and folders to a local device for offline viewing.

Jailbreak community patch bugs that Apple won't

On Wednesday Apple released iOS 4.0.2 firmware for the iPhone and iPod touch and 3.2.2 for the iPad. This update fixes the security exploit that was used by the jailbreakme.com website to jailbreak iDevices. But there's a catch. While Apple acknowledges the seriousness of the issue, there's no fix on offer for first-generation iPhone and iPod touch owners. You haven't spent any money lately, so no patch love for you.

Fake ImageShack site serving malware, links distributed over IM

In a combination of domain typosquatting next to spoofed image files, malware authors managed to successfully impersonate ImageShack, the 5th largest image hosting website on the Internet, the result of which is a malware campaign circulating over MSN, enticing users into infecting themselves by clicking on the spammed links to fake image files.

Britain releases its X-Files

The truth may be out there, but so far it's not in the government files. The British government posted the first batch of its X-Files to a website today in a project that will eventually see the Ministry of Defence turn over to the National Archives 160 files on UFO sightings, reports the GuardianSome of the incidents are truly bizarre, but although some UFO sightings remain unexplained there is no evidence in the files for alien contact.
