Western Digital gets to business with NAS

Its first foray into the small business Network Attached Storage (NAS) market, Western Digital's new WD Sentinel DX4000 stands out mainly by virtue of its use of Windows Server 2008 R2 Essentials rather than Linux, as on most other NAS boxes.The hardware is pretty unremarkable, Western Digital opting for a dual-core Intel D525 Atom to drive its appliance supported by 2GB of DDR3 RAM.

Netgear ReadyNAS NV+ v2

The ReadyNAS NV+ v2 is nicely designed and built, and Netgear's X-RAID2 technology does a good job of managing the 4-bay array discreetly. The web-based management tool's redesigned UI is an improvement, but we'd like to see more more add-ons for the new ARM-based platform.

Promise of storage for SMBs

Be it up-scaled NAS, down-scaled SAN or a mix of the two, the market of choice for storage vendors this year appears to be the small to medium-sized business. Drobo vendor Data Robotics started the ball rolling a couple of weeks back and now RAID specialist Promise has followed suit with two new SmartStor appliances, aimed expressly at SMBs and offering support for a mix of NAS and iSCSI SAN data sharing.
