Red Hat, Novell win verdict in Linux patent infringement case

More great news for Linux distributors Red Hat and Novell, which prevailed in a patent infringement case brought by IP Innovation.IP Innovation, a unit of Acacia Research and holder of multiple patent portfolios, alleged that the two Linux companies infringed three patents that protect computer GUIs that span multiple work sites and that allow users to access icons remotely, the court documents show.

The resolution that's now so hotly anticipated by the groklaw mob seems like the worst possible outcome: no resolution on the key issue; the victory of money and media manipulation over right; and, lots of aggrieved parties left with axes to grind.

SCO files for bankruptcy

SCO Group, best known for suing IBM, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.In a statement, SCO said it was filing to reorganize under Chapter 11.

Where does SCO go from here?

SCO took a huge gamble and lost! There never was much hope that they could pull together a team of lawyers better than those at IBM but the potential threat to Linux, whether real or imagined, is gone -- along with any asset value SCO had left. There customer list is all that's left!
