Red Hat announced an upgrade of its Enterprise Linux that offers increased scalability, performance and management of its KVM virtualization as well as performance kicks for Xen. RHEL 5.8, along with the beta of a new Subscription Asset Manager (SAM) tool, were made available on Feb. 21.

Qualcomm, TI, Nvidia offer new ARM chips for Windows 8

Texas Instruments and Qualcomm, two of the biggest suppliers of ARM-based processors in the smartphone market, have announced chips intended to run Microsoft Windows 8. Their arrival (probably) next year will help answer a number of interesting questions about the relative power, performance, and price of Intel and ARM chips, and the efficiency of modern versions of Windows compared with the Linux-based Google Android operating system.

Adding new features to Linux has not affected core performance

Phoronix has published the results of a series of benchmark tests on the past five years worth of Linux kernels, from Linux 2.6.12 through to Linux 2.6.37 (dev) releases. The results show that on the whole, new features have not bloated the OS or hit performance.

Microsoft buys desktop parallel-computing software maker ISC

Microsoft has purchased the assets of Interactive Supercomputing (ISC), a desktop parallel-computing vendor, according to a blog post on the Windows Server Division Weblog. The move fits in with Microsoft's continued efforts to build up its high-performance server capabilities so as to better take on Linux in that market.

Hallelujah! Nokia N900 Maemo 5 device supports T-Mobile USA 3G

I have the Nokia N800 and N810 Internet Tablets and while they can be fun to use from time to time, but their performance and speed holds them back. Today Nokia announced the rumored N900 running Maemo 5 and with T-Mobile USA 3G support I am putting my Nokia N97 for sale. The N900 is the latest Linux-powered Internet Tablet with GSM/HSDPA and just about every other wireless technology you could want.
