Sony wises up, unveils new networked Blu-ray player with Netflix, Slacker support

It was just a couple of days ago I was complaining about Sony's decision to introduce a Blu-ray player with built-in Wi-Fi into the marketplace without offering any of the Internet services that other connected home theater devices are already offering. Now Sony appears to be sipping from the streaming-media Kool-Aid with the launch of its BDP-N460 Blu-ray player, which not only has a network connection, but also will offer services via its Bravia Internet Video platform.

Netflix's streaming-video service comes to Sony's networked Bravia HDTVs

I mentioned yesterday that Sharp's network-TV platform, Aquos Net, wasn't robust in comparison to the offerings Vizio's connected sets will soon have. Sony’s Bravia Internet Video platform also started out as similarly anemic, but lately it's added better streaming-media options, like Amazon Video On Demand for movies and Slacker for audio, and latched onto Yahoo's widget platform for additional Internet apps.

Spam, which uses the same port as regular e-mail traffic, thus becomes the convenient excuse for eliminating the open Internet and creating a new, carrier-controlled network in which innovative services like Netflix Video on Demand can be killed, because they threaten cable's business model.
