Windows 8 versions explained

Microsoft says it has not decided how many versions of Windows 8 it will release, and it could easily offer the same number as it did with Windows 7. However, based on the registry in the Consumer Preview version, the Windows 8 Beta website suggests there could be an unexpected extra: Windows 8 Professional Plus.

Microsoft Windows 7 has now taken 30 percent of the PC operating system market, but it's still a long way behind Windows XP's 52 percent, according to numbers published today on the Netmarketshare website. As the name implies, the market shares are calculated from website traffic, and thus may not precisely reflect the global installed base.

Nokia 'Plan B' investor letter was an engineer's hoax

An open letter purporting to come from a group of disgruntled Nokia investors was a hoax, according to Twitter posts to which the group's website now automatically redirects.The letter had laid out a series of objections to Nokia's Windows Phone 7 tie-in with Microsoft, claiming that the nine young investors involved would attempt at the company's Annual General Meeting in May to oust Stephen Elop from his position at the top of the Finnish handset manufacturer.

Microsoft needs to learn how to speak Apple and Android

Five years ago, Microsoft might have been justified in assuming that every visitor to its website was running Windows. In 2011, that assumption is just unrealistic. An awful lot of people are using non-Microsoft devices to connect to PCs these days. Microsoft is missing an opportunity to talk directly to them.

Webroot: Iranian distributes free Firefox password logger

A freely available Trojan has been circulated that steals passwords stored within Firefox, Internet Explorer and the Windows Registry, security company Webroot reported last Wednesday.The Trojan, which Webroot named Trojan-PWS-Nslog, modified a core Firefox file — nsLoginManagerPrompter.
