Nokia files suits against HTC, RIM and ViewSonic

Nokia has alleged that HTC, RIM and ViewSonic have infringed on 45 Nokia patents in lawsuits filed in the US and Germany.Nokia alleged on Wednesday that the companies have variously infringed on patents covering dual function antennas, power management and multimode radios, application stores, multitasking, navigation, conversational message display, dynamic menus, data encryption and retrieval of email attachments on a mobile device.

Apple launches fresh Samsung suits in Germany

33.5% of global patents filed by US companies in 2007

US-based businesses accounted for 33.5% of total patents filed internationally in 2007, World Intellectual Property Organization said. US companies filed 156,100 international patent applications. The total number of patents filed worldwide was up by 4.7% over 2006.

Sun head slams patent system

Sun Microsystems has called for reform of the US patent system, with its president and chief operating officer saying authorities are too free to issue patents, some of which were "spurious" and being used to stifle innovation.Jonathan Schwartz told ZDNet Australia  in an interview during a brief visit to Australia this week that while intellectual property constituted "the foundation of global economies", there was also a limit.
