Cameraphones drive online photo-sharing

Cameraphones are now the main way that consumers share photos, rather than by email, according to a survey of 2,000 British and American consumers by Futuresource Consulting. The results are frequently viewed on a laptop or netbook PC by UK consumers, though "consumers in the USA tend to use the desktop PC," the company says.

Mobile software Monday: Evernote comes to the BlackBerry platform

One of my favorite mobile apps/services is Evernote because it works across multiple mobile devices with native clients (iPhone and Windows Mobile) and via email while also working on PC and Mac computers. The folks at Evernote have stated they are working on clients for more mobile platforms and the next version is now ready for RIM BlackBerry owners. I've spent a few days using the latest BlackBerry client and you can check out some screenshots of it in action in my image gallery.

Weak US dollar starts to drive up mobile software prices

I am working on a full review of the excellent SoftMaker Office 2008 for Pocket PC and just received a note from the company that has an effect on pricing for U.S. buyers. Due to the fact that SoftMaker is a German company dealing in Euros, the significant loss in value of the U.S. dollar has driven them to make changes in their software pricing. SoftMaker reported in the email that when the Euro was introduced in 2002 it was about equal to the U.S. dollar, but the dollar has now fallen to be worth 60 percent less.

Back to Basics #1 - Cloning a hard disk

Given the kinds of comments that I'm getting (mostly through email) I've come to the conclusion that having a few "back to basics" posts on here might be worthwhile to a lot of readers. Sure, if you're a hardcore geek then this stuff is likely to be second nature to you, but for those on the path to becoming a hardcore geek, a little helping hand might be appreciated! For this, the first back to basics post I've decided to cover the way that I clone hard disks here at the PC Doc HQ.

Build a Vista-compatible office PC for $305 (software not included)

A reader set me an email challenge the other day - put together a cheap yet well spec-ed and relatively powerful office PC that's up to the challenge of running Vista. To make the challenge even harder, the whole package (PC, keyboard, mouse, LCD panel and Vista OS) had to come in at under $600 (the reader wanted to build five of these systems). Can it be done? Read on to find out.

Hey Dell...Wanna sell some Classmates?

Now that OLPC plans to distribute OLPC XOs in the States through OLPC America, I sent Agnes Kwan, Intel spokeswoman, an email asking if Intel planned to compete in this market with their Classmate PC. We had a chance to catch up today since I'm buried under 14 inches of snow and can't bring myself to tackle shoveling my driveway just yet.

WebFives/Vizrea aquired by Microsoft so download your content in the next 30 days

I set up a Vizrea account back in 2006 when they launched their service that was going to make it easy to get photos and video off of my camera-enabled phone and onto my PC so I could share it easily with others. I used the service a bit at first, but then moved on to just uploading pics to Flickr. Vizrea launched in 2006 with ex-Microsoft engineer Mike Toutonghi kicking off the service that he thought of after some frustrating camera phone experience at the DEMO conference. I just received the following letter in my email inbox, and it looks like Mike may be going back to Microsoft. WebFives (previously known as Vizrea) has been aquired by Microsoft and the service will shut down after 31 December.

MobileTechRoundup show #113, AT&T Tilt, HP 2710p, and Plantronics 480

I am on the road in D.C. and tried out the Plantronics .audio 480 Virtual Phone Booth to connect with James and Kevin for MobileTechRoundup show #113. It is a very portable solution for Skype and is much easier than packing around the Plantronics DSP-500 I usually record with. We talked a bit about the AT&T Tilt, Nokia N95-3, and a way to turn your camera phone into a webcam. James spent the money on an HP 2710p Tablet PC and is extremely happy with the device. Kevin read an email from Aaron and we each offered our opinion on a 3G iPhone. Earthcomber for S60 was also mentioned as a free download.

HP expands Windows Mobile line with the iPAQ Voice Messenger

HP has had Pocket PC Phone Edition Mobile Messenger devices for a couple of years, but they have never really seemed to have taken off. HP continues to try to compete in the mobile market and is launching their HP iPAQ 500 series Voice Messenger. The Voice Messenger is a Windows Mobile 6 Standard device (aka Smartphone) and looks to also have a 1.3 megapixel camera. The HP Voice Messenger is capitalizing on the increasing popularity of VoIP and includes capabilities and integrated WiFi for this functionality. HP is also including a powerful voice command system that actually allows you to reply to email by dictating and sending a voice response without the need for any typing. GSM/EDGE and Bluetooth radios are also included on the device. The new HP Voice Messenger should be available this Spring, but you can check out our image gallery in the meantime.
