For a spatial data provider, a new system to deliver even greater precision to customers needed always-on management, a solution offered by a cloud environment.
Hon Hai Precision Industry---a company best known for making Apple products like the iPad---outlined production improvements, data center plans and diversification efforts into new markets.
An international team of researchers has started to collect imaging data on the Soufriere Hills Volcano in Montserrat which erupts regularly since 1995. They're using the equivalent of a CAT scan to understand its internal structure and how and when it erupts. Several years ago, the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) funded the CALIPSO project ('Caribbean Andesitic Lava Island Precision Seismo-geodetic Observatory'). The new experiment is dubbed SEA-CALIPSO ('Seismic Experiment with Air-gun source') and 'will use air guns and a string of sensors off the back of a research ship combined with sensors on land to try to image the magma chamber.' Early results are surprising, as said one of the leading scientists: 'The interesting thing is that much more magma is erupting than appears represented by the subsiding bowl.' ...
Dell unveiled its data center-hosted desktop product line on Tuesday. Unlike rivals Hewlett-Packard and IBM, Dell didn't build its solution on blade servers but instead opted for a high performance system using a 2U box called the Dell Precision R5400 Rack Workstation.
In a recent article, PhysOrg.com reports that a team of computer scientists at Brown University has developed 'Drawing on Air,' a haptic-aided interface to help artists to create 3D illustrations while wearing a virtual reality mask. 'The technique introduces two new strategies, using one hand or two hands, to give artists the tools they need for drawing different types of curves, and for viewing and editing their work.' The researchers hope that these techniques will improve the precision with which scientists can interact with their 3D data using a computer. This also would help artists to illustrate complicated artistic, scientific, and medical subjects. Read more for several pictures made with this system.
