IBM outlines prototype Holey Optochip

IBM has outlined a prototype optical chipset called Holey Optochip, which can transfer one terabit of information a second. That throughput, assuming the chip eventually scales, could provide a bandwidth boost that alters the supercomputing and datacentre landscape.

IBM Labs is taking water cooling to another level--and pumping water into each layer of a semiconductor via pipes as thin as a human hair.On Thursday, IBM said that its researchers--along with Fraunhofer Institute in Berlin--demonstrated a prototype that integrates a water cooling system direction into 3-D semiconductors.

IBM Research may blaze path to instant movie downloads

IBM Research says it will demonstrate a new prototype optical transceiver chipset that "is fast enough to reduce the download time for a typical high definition feature-length film to a single second compared to 30 minutes or more over the best available connectivity today." That's saying something.
