Pssst! Want to see some pre-alpha prototype software?

The worst developer conference I have ever been to (and I have made a habit of hanging around these things for the last half decade) has to be the unfortunate couple of days I spent with Gupta Technologies a few years back now.I pretty much agreed to go as it was being staged in Berlin and I wanted to see the Brandenburg Gate if I’m honest with you.

Jambot, a musician robot that improvises

An Australian PhD researcher from Queensland University of Technology (QUT) has created a jamming robot which can improvise musical rhythms and melodies to the music it listens to. If Jambot, as it is named, is a musical robot, it's not made of metal. Here is how the researcher describes Jambot. 'It is a piece of computer software that could play along to a soloist, providing a backing track, or improvising a conga drum solo over recorded music being played by a DJ, for example.' Jambot, which is still in its prototype stage, will be commercialized by the computer scientist when he completes his PhD next year. But read more...

Using your voice to pilot your computer

According to The Seattle Times, an interdisciplinary team of scientists of the University of Washington (UW) has developed Vocal Joystick, a software which enables people with disabilities to control their computers using the sound of their voice and without the need to use a mouse. Their virtual computer mouse driven by sound has already been tested at the UW Medical Center with spinal-cord-injury patients and other participants with varying levels of disabilities. The researchers, who developed their own voice-recognition technology, hope to have a prototype available online this fall. But read more...

Do software engineers think about hardware?

After spending some time on the phone to Symbian this morning I thought it was kind of interesting to note that a lot of the discussion I had with this operating system company was focused on hardware rather than software. In the same vein, I notice another batch of news emanating from Intel HQ about a prototype memory technology called Phase Change Memory (PCM) – and that most of the implications for news like this directly impacts the way applications may soon be developed.

Use your cellphone as a 3-D mouse

In recent years, we've started to use our cellphones not only for placing calls or exchanging messages. Now, we take pictures, read our e-mails, listen to music or watch TV. But, according to New Scientist, UK researchers are going further with a prototype software that turns your cellphone into a 3-D mouse. The phone is connected to your computer via Bluetooth. And you control the image on the screen by rotating or moving your phone. As says one of the researchers, "it feels like a much more natural way to interact and exchange data." The technology might first be used in shopping malls to buy movie tickets or to interact with advertising displays. But read more...
