Nasuni study pokes holes in OpenStack

Clouds based on open-source OpenStack software may not be as good at ingesting large amounts of data as those from Microsoft or Amazon, a study has found.The study evaluated Amazon Web Services, Windows Azure and Rackspace Cloud Files, and was released by cloud storage specialist Nasuni on Wednesday.

Rackspace rolls out load balancers

Rackspace has released load balancers for its cloud and dedicated servers, in order to provide greater scalability and availability to data hosted on them.The Rackspace Cloud Load Balancers, released on Tuesday, are designed to increase the scalability of applications by automatically distributing loads between multiple servers.

Rackspace moves cloud data to the UK

With security and fears of data leaving the country at the top of IT managers' list of concerns about cloud computing, the announcement today by service provider Rackspace that it will locate its cloud infrastructure for UK customers in the UK will be noted by those looking for a large enterprise hosting provider. It means that Rackspace's data – sorry, I mean your data -- will be stored and processed without leaving the country.

Nimbus enterprise flash storage promises lower energy costs

Storage technology provider Nimbus Data Systems has come out with its latest enterprise flash storage system, which can provide up to 10 terabytes per shelf or up to 250 terabytes in a single file system. Nimbus claims that its platform carries 90 percent lower energy, cooling and rackspace costs than traditional 15,000-rpm disk arrays that would normally be used for high-performance computing applications.

Rackspace beefs up attack defenses

Hosting provider Rackspace on Monday introduced PrevenTier, a new security product that's aimed at reducing exposure to denial-of-service (DoS) attacks, which can bring networks to a halt through a deluge of simultaneous data requests. The service, which includes technology from Arbor Networks and Riverhead Networks, attempts to prevent attacks by examining all incoming data and identifying potentially malicious packets.
