The Zamzar website, which converts files between formats, has launched a new service: it will now convert files submitted by email. This could be particular useful to smartphone users who are often emailed files that their device is unable to display.

Google enhances Maps for Android and iPhone browsers

Google has updated its mobile browser-based mapping service, to bring it more in line with dedicated Google Maps apps for Android and iPhone.According to a blog post on Friday by Google software engineer Alireza Ali, users of those smartphone platforms are now able to see their current location — after agreeing to transmit such information to Google — and search for nearby locations with suggest and autocomplete.

Google has rolled out new functionality for its Docs product that makes it easier for people to search for the various files they have uploaded to the cloud-based service.For the last year or so, Google Docs users have been able to upload a variety of file types to the service, which began life as a text document collaboration product.

Yahoo blames Microsoft for Windows Phone 7 data bug

Microsoft's implementation of email retrieval settings on Windows Phone 7 is to blame for Yahoo Mail customers using unexpectedly large amounts of data on that smartphone platform, Yahoo has said.In the latest twist to the search for culpability over the issue — some users have been consuming 25 times the data that should be needed to retrieve Yahoo Mail emails on Windows Phone 7 handsets — Yahoo said on Wednesday that Microsoft was responsible.

Gartner: Nokia needs a European Steve Jobs

Nokia is on the lookout for a replacement for current chief executive, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, according to an online report posted today.The report, published in the Wall Street Journal Online, cites "people familiar with the matter" as the source of the information and suggests that it is Nokia's failure to make an impact on the smartphone market that is behind the Finnish company's search for a new CEO.
