Microsoft Surface Pro review

The Core i5-based Surface Pro combines ultrabook components with a (chunky) 10.6in. tablet form factor to deliver decent performance and excellent build quality. However, a few design issues, missing features and, above all, disappointing battery life suggest you'd be wise to wait and see how this product develops.

Microsoft: Azure PaaS tech could be given away for free

Microsoft has an "ambition" to make some of Windows Azure's platform-as-a-service components free, after the IT giant announced sweeping changes to the service that ratcheted up its competition with Amazon Web Services.On Tuesday Microsoft's general manager for Windows Azure, Bill Hilf, told ZDNet UK that the company is contemplating making some of Azure's PaaS features free in an attempt to spur developer adoption.

The EliteBook 8560w is a well-built 15.6in. mobile workstation that can be configured with top-notch components, making it ideal for CPU-, GPU- and memory-intensive workloads. It's not especially portable, though, and battery life is among its least impressive features.

Apple and Oracle all hugs on Java SE7 for Mac OS X

A joint press release from Oracle and Apple on Friday cleared up the angst over the future role of Java on Mac OS. A newly-formed OpenJDK project will handle the release and Apple will do the heavy lifting on the "key components, tools and technology required for a Java SE 7 implementation on Mac OS X," the release said.

Which is Better, the Kindle or the iPad?

The problem so far is that the two most popular devices, the Amazon Kindle and the Apple iPad, are primarily geared to a consumer audience and we haven't yet seen the sort of applications and security features that could make these devices important components in corporate document strategies.

HP EliteBook 8540p

HP's EliteBook 8540p has a superb keyboard and is packed with top-notch features, including a couple of USB 3.0 ports. It's expensive, but you're paying for top-quality components and solid build. The standard battery is unlikely to see you through a full working day though.

Snow Leopard Server

Snow Leopard Server includes major updates to some of the OS's core components and is now fully 64-bit. Ease of use, plus simple and affordable licensing make OS X a viable alternative to Microsoft's Windows Server 2008, although we had problems with one or two features.
