HP to begin charging for firmware updates and service packs for servers

HP server customers are about to get an unwelcome surprise when they need to update firmware or apply a service pack. Effective later this month, those downloads, which often fix critical bugs, will require either a current warranty or an extended support agreement.

HP preps updated ProLiant Gen 8 servers

HP has announced updates for its ProLiant Generation 8 server line, which HP has said increase datacentre automation, compared with previous HP servers.Five of the new servers, which are part of its HP's Project Voyager push will use Intel Xeon E5-2400 processors.

Campaign Monitor hacked, accounts used for spamming

E-mail marketing software developer Campaign Monitor warned users today of a server compromise that took place during the weekend.The compromise allowed the attackers to gain access to customer accounts, which they abused by importing their own lists of harvested emails in order to launch spam campaigns using the clean IP reputation of their servers.

Apply Daylight Saving Time updates to all your mobile devices

On 8 August 2005, President George W. Bush signed the Energy Policy Act of 2005. This Act changed the time change dates for Daylight Saving Time in the U.S. Beginning in 2007, DST begins on the second Sunday in March, this Sunday 11 March, and ends the first Sunday in November. This change in DST requires that every computer, mobile device, many software applications, servers, or other piece of electronic gear that automatically updates its time based on the old settings apply an update. There are updates for Windows PCs, Apple computers, Windows Mobile devices, Symbian devices, Palm OS devices, and BlackBerry devices.
