Microsoft has had to come up with a new way for Windows 8 users to boot from USB drives because the operating system's start-up time is too quick for the old method, the company has said.Since Windows 95, users have been able to press a function key such as F8 or F12 during start-up, to access advanced boot menus, debugging options and other features.

Google prepares service for speeding up webpages

Google has announced a new paid service for webmasters that will automatically speed up the loading of their webpages.Page Speed Service, revealed on Thursday, joins other members of the Page Speed family including a browser extension for testing page performance and an online API to help developers figure out what they can do to speed up their pages.

Opera has released details of project Featherweight, the codename for the redesign of the next version of the Opera web browser.The Oslo-based company said it was aiming to slim down and redesign the browser in order to bring speed and usability improvements.

Nokia has released details of the next version of the Symbian operating system, known as Anna, that improves usability, browser speed and bring new features to Ovi maps.Previously referred to as Symbian PR2, the newest OS build is now called Anna and includes a number of changes from the previous iteration.

Chromium to get GPU acceleration

Google's Chromium browser for Linux systems will support GPU acceleration, bringing it in line with rivals such as Microsoft's IE9 and Mozilla's Firefox 4.In a blog post on Friday, Google software engineer Vangelis Kokkevis said the move would let Chromium "speed up its entire drawing model, including many common 2D operations such as compositing and image scaling".

PrintCentral 1.5 released for iPad, iPhone

Developer EuroSmartz on Thursday released a major update to PrintCentral, the company's printing utility for iPads and iPhone/iPod Touch. Version 1.5 better supports Wifi printing and lets users print DropBox documents. In addition, the company offered software to support USB printers.
