UK internet use increases 50 percent in five years

People in the UK are becoming increasingly comfortable with the internet and are spending 50 percent more time online than they were five years ago, a media literacy survey by Ofcom has shown.The telecoms regulator said on Thursday that 50 percent of people had "concerns over the internet", which is significantly down the 70 percent who had such concerns in 2007.

Intuit service maps QuickBooks expense data to carbon impact

Most of the carbon footprint calculators housed out on the Internet are intended for either consumers or big businesses. Intuit, long-time friend of the little guy, has introduced a free service called Green Snapshot that hooks into your QuickBooks software and uses the information you provide about your expenses to give you ideas about where you can adjust your spending with an eye to positive eco-impact.

The mobile web is an utter letdown

With a definitive split on the Internet between desktops, notebooks and netbooks, and mobile devices running a list as long as your arm, the mobile web has developed to a molecule in an ocean.This month I am spending most of my time in London doing research, so travelling by train back and forth from Canterbury, moving house half way across the city, trying to cram for my exams next month and heading to the north of the UK on the second weekend into May.

A great talk by the inventor of the worldwide web Tim Berners-Lee from this year's TED conference, well worth spending 18 minutes of your life with.It's also worth reflecting on how new the internet is: in January 1992 there were only 50 web servers in the world after the web's invention in 1990.

I feel bereft, without a netbook to be called my own, and spending the next month travelling around all of Mexico. My last Acer Aspire One broke while I hamfistedly tried to upgrade its RAM, so I am forced to write longhand using a pen in a book with old school hand writing, and then to transcribe these scribbles via the medium of the internet.
