Symantec is readying two new utilities that will help customers move mission critical applications to VMware's virtualization platform.The first offering, Application HA, is based on the company's Veritas Cluster Server and offers mission critical services for mission critical applications, including monitoring and failure detection as well as the ability to restart failed applications.

Symantec: SaaS efforts revving

Symantec said its software as a service (SaaS) product will go live later this year. Symantec CEO John Thompson said on the company's fiscal fourth quarter earnings conference call that its Symantec Protection Network, its first SaaS offering, is on track and the company will also launch more services.

The Church of England's publishing arm has advised clergy to ignore Symantec security warnings, after its Norton Antivirus product wrongly identified church software as spyware. Many Church of England vicars use a software tool called Visual Liturgy to plan, create and deliver church services.

KAZ keen on software-as-service

Over the next eight weeks, Telstra subsidiary KAZ will review its datacentre and hosting operations as the systems integrator prepares to ramp up delivery of software as a service. Microsoft launches its security service

Windows Live OneCare provides a mini-IT department for those who want a managed service to provide virus protection, anti-spyware and firewalls. It is the first of many managed online security services to debut this year. Offerings from Symantec, McAfee and other established security vendors are due out as well.
