Software application development has been going on for decades. In the old world of software, applications took a (usually accounting) business event and then validated, stored and reported it. These were internal usage utilities that dealt with internal data. That's the wrong perspective to have today. Businesses don't want apps - they need 'capabilities'. IBM software in your home? Pact enables five-city smart meter pilot in Europe

A new relationship between IBM and Hildebrand, an energy consulting firm, will combine the tech giant's data management software with energy monitoring devices in five European cities: Birmingham, Bristol and Manchester in the United Kingdom, and Plovdiv and Ivanovo in Bulgaria.The deal was made possible by funding that Hildebrand received for a 30-month pilot into energy usage monitor -- and its associated effect on human behavior.

Net neutrality or protection racket?

If peer to peer traffic is clogging the Internet and slowing down Skype calls, why not mark it as lower priority and do the download overnight? The software updates and Word of Warcraft files that use P2P quite legally aren't hugely urgent and that kind of 'when you’re not busy' bandwidth usage is how Microsoft makes Windows Update polite (the Background Internet Transfer Service doesn't work quite like P2P but some of the principles are similar).

Microsoft goes Hohm with energy-tracking application

Software giant Microsoft is beta-testing an application called Microsoft Hohm that consumers can use to track energy usage and figure out ways that their household can conserve.To make the case that this is something we all need, the company is holding up figures from a May 2009 Gartner survey of consumers in the United States and the United Kingdom, suggesting that 80 percent of them are willing and eager to take action on their energy bills.
