Facebook: Virtualisation does not scale

Facebook refuses to employ virtualisation across its infrastructure, because the technology does not scale efficiently, the director of the social networking site's labs division has said.The social network shies away from abstracting its technology into virtual machines because at large-scale, the economics don't work out and the cost of dealing with hardware failures is too high, Gio Coglitore of Facebook Labs, said at a press event on Tuesday.

Fujitsu, blades and virtualisation

Fujitsu Siemens has launched a BladeEngine for its PRIMERGY Blade Servers that offers virtualisation features along with unified network communications and a combined 10 Gbit Ethernet and iSCSI SAN Mezzanine card, according to the company.Designed for use in data centres, the card has a dual capability with its 10 Gbit Ethernet and iSCSI SAN controller for virtualised operations so that an individual machine can operate in, say, VMware and Xen environments.

Hostworks take NineMSN down virtual path

Adelaide-based Web hosting company Hostworks is ramping up its investment in server virtualisation after re-signing its biggest customer, NineMSN, for a further three to six years.Hostworks, which has been hosting NineMSN's network of 130 Web sites since the portal began operation in 1997, will continue to provide its services to the Nine/Microsoft joint venture until 2013.

EMC stings IBM on storage virtualisation

Storage vendor EMC this week released details about its upcoming entry into the storage virtualisation market, provoking an uncharacteristically pugnacious response from seasoned campaigner, IBM.EMC said its Invista software will leverage 'intelligent' switches -- which can independently find an optimum location and direct data to it -- to create virtual volumes in a networked storage facility, commonly called a storage area network (SAN).
