Office 2013 programs include an app store for developers

Users running Microsoft Excel, Word and other Office 2013 applications will be able to try or buy companion apps from an integrated app store, without leaving the application. The new Apps For Office apps will run in both desktop and web-based versions of Office. Companies will also be able to use the app store feature to distribute companion programs developed in-house.

Google snaps up Quickoffice and Meebo

Google has bought the mobile productivity firm Quickoffice in a bid to make its Google Apps product suite more compatible with various file formats, the search giant said on Tuesday.Quickoffice provides word processing and other office task functions for smartphones and tablets, including those running Google's Android operating system, and iOS-based devices such as the iPad and iPhone.

Symbian gets mobile Word, Excel and PowerPoint apps

Microsoft has released mobile versions of its core Office products, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, for Symbian smartphone users.Although they are not yet in the Nokia Store, the apps became available for download via the Nokia software update tool and the PC-based Nokia Suite on Tuesday.

Google Apps updates: Enough to compete with Office 2010?

As with most things in tech, that depends. As Sam Diaz pointed out in his coverage of the updates from the Atmosphere event Monday, "Google has been aggressively targeting its cloud-based Google Apps at the enterprise, hosting events like these to spread the word on the strength of the suite.

Goodbye, Works!

While "Starter 2010" is fairly anemic (it includes bare-bones versions of Word and Excel only), it should meet the home needs of most students. To be honest, though, my interest in Starter 2010 has nothing to do with its utility. OpenOffice and Google Apps offer more functionality for free. What I care about are the file formats.

Documents To Go for iPhone now supports Excel editing and creation

I am reminded of the good old days of the competition between mobile software on my Palm devices when I see developers like DataViz and Quickoffice going back and forth with updates and improvements. We are seeing this same competition take place on the iPhone as one takes the lead and then the other comes out with an update that passes the other one by, until the other updates yet again and retakes the lead. Today, we see that DataViz has released Documents To Go version 2.0 that adds support for Excel on the iPhone. This is a FREE update for existing owners. We now have both apps supporting Word and Excel on the iPhone and it looks like the next hurdle is PowerPoint.
