Sharp is thinking of selling more white label appliance products to Samsung and expand its partnership with the South Korean electronics giant.
The Japan Times reported Monday that Sharp wants to expand its sales of unbranded appliance to Samsung, which would then market these products under its brand in South Korea and other markets. Such a tie-up would boost the ailing Japanese manufacturer's bottomline, while helping Samsung diversify its product portfolio, unnamed sources said in the report.
It is also expected to announce Tuesday a business plan running through to March 2016 that will include increasing its supply of liquid crystal display (LCD) panels to Samsung, the report added.
Earlier in March, Samsung paid 10.4 billion yen (US$112 million) for a 3 percent stake in Sharp's LCD business. The alliance was to guarantee a stable and timely supply of Sharp's LCD panels for large-sized TVs and smaller LCD screens for mobile devices such as laptops.
The company is expected to post bigger-than-expected annual losses on Tuesday due to low factory output, which meant it had to write off excess capacity.
