At a media briefing Monday, researchers at the Nanyang Technological University showed off the prototype of the Social Cloud TV which uses the cloud to distribute TV content to different devices including the television set, the computer and mobile phones.
Different users can view the same video simultaneously while they text or video chat with each other on different devices.
On the right is Wen Yonggang, assistant professor at NTU's school of computer engineering, who led the project. According to Wen, current TV distribution technology is challenged by scalability as video streaming cannot support multiple devices.
Using cloud, the school claims its Social Cloud TV technology can "cost-effectively" transcode videos at the backend and stream the video into devices in the most suitable format.
