Square planted its roots with local craft fairs and artisianal coffee shops, and the payments provider continues to develop that merchant base -- just now on the world's stage.

The San Francisco-headquartered company is pushing its flagship point-of-sale software Register worldwide with language support boosted to span English, Spanish, French and Japanese.

CEO Jack Dorsey announced the news from London on Thursday, further boasting the app now supports 130 internationally recognized currencies .

Square has been consistently bolstering Register from a myriad of angles over the last several months, tacking on a new invoice feature, an online scheduling tool for SMBs, and an order-ahead function dubbed Pickup.

The most recent lead-in could be found with the October launch of the Square App Marketplace, touted as a digital one-stop for merchants seeking relevant apps not only from Square itself but also other business applications tailored to work with Square. On the flip side, developers can also bring their apps to Square sellers.

Earlier this month, Square already hinted at its global ambitions (or at least incurred influence) with the debut of an EMV chip-card reader, responding to an imminent shift in the United States to more secure chip-based (versus swipe-based) credit cards.

Led by MasterCard and Visa, among many other financial industry players, support for chip-based cards finally took hold in the United States last winter in the wake of the massive security breach incurred by Target as well as an ongoing string of subsequent attacks on other major retailers.

Square is stepping up its holiday efforts as well this year -- albeit on a slightly lighter note -- with a new gift card introduced integration on Tuesday.

Also linked to Register, sellers can offer, redeem and track gift cards, which can be used and reloaded like standard debit and credit cards.
