Groupon's local coupon business has officially changed its name from Stardeals Australia to Groupon Australia today after it won a legal battle for the title from home-grown competitor Scoopon, a sister site of CatchOfTheDay.

Groupon's local arm has now changed its name to Groupon Australia, and also began operating under www.groupon.com.au.
Groupon launched legal action to wrest the name back from Scoopon, which was set to go to trial this month. The two parties settled before the case hit the courts. Settlement details have been kept confidential in the case, but Scoopon's founders had previously turned down offers of over US$280,000.
Groupon Australia CEO Patrick Schmidt described it as an exciting day for the company.
"The Groupon brand is known the world over as the pioneer of local e-commerce. It's a trusted brand that many people know, so to have that strength now fully behind us is great," he said in a statement.
