Storage software growth was anemic in the second quarter, but hardware system sales are growing at a healthier clip, according to IDC data.

IDC reported that storage software revenue in the second quarter was $3.36 billion, up 0.9 percent from a year ago. The growth was the slowest since the fourth quarter of 2009. The slowdown was blamed on European economic worries, cuts in government spending and product transitions for large suppliers.

Among storage software suppliers, EMC had 26.4 percent market share; IBM had 14.7 percent and Symantec had 14.6 percent. In the storage softwa4re market data protection and recovery and archiving software had the most growth with gains of 2.4 percent and 2.2 percent, respectively.

IDC's software report follows the hardware external storage system standings from last week. Total storage hardware revenue in the second quarter was $8.1 billion, up 8 percent from a year ago. EMC was the market leader and IBM and NetApp were in a statistical tie for No. 2.

Storage area network gear grew at an 8 percent clip in the second quarter and network attached storage gained 2.5 percent from a year ago.

Looking at Cloud Storage I just noticed that one company in the UK, JDI Backup LTD is selling multiple products for cloud storage under different names, JustCloud, MyPCBackup, BackupGenie, and Zip Cloud. All have separate mobile apps and slightly different pricing structures. I was just wondering if someone could comment on why a Company would do this type of saturation for Cloud Storage?
