Telecom Italia is expanding its fibre broadband network.

FTTC (fibre to the cabinet) connectivity with download speeds of 30Mbps is now available in 22 cities across the country, the company said on Friday.

The announcement marks a major expansion of Telecom Italia's fibre network, with the rollout starting last year in just three cities: Rome, Turin and Naples.

The additional 22 cities now able to get FTTC are: Monza, Bergamo, Brescia, Como, Varese, Venice, Verona, Vicenza, Padua, Bologna, Reggio Emilia, Genoa, Florence, Pisa, Prato, Ancona, Bari, Taranto, Palermo, Brindisi and Catanzaro.

In total, the telco has now laid fibre in 33 cities in Italy, with the next wave of FTTC — in Trieste, Treviso, Udine, Forlì, Pescara, Leghorn, Perugia and Catania — set to go live soon.

The telco is also deploying FTTH (fibre to the home) on a far smaller scale, offering download speeds of 100Mbps. Milan has become the first city to get Telecom Italia's FTTH network, with 455,000 residential properties being connected up, which the company plans to extend to 564,00 by the end of 2015.

In total, 2.8 million premises are now in reach of its fibre network, Telecom Italia said.
