SurveyMonkey opens first Australian office

Summary: SurveyMonkey has listened to customer feedback and has launched its Enterprise product designed to allow businesses to collate data from multiple accounts, and will be opening an office in Sydney to provide ground support.

Silicon Valley-based online questionnaire platform firm, SurveyMonkey, will be opening up its first Asia-Pacific office in Sydney, in conjunction with the launch of five new products.

SurveyMonkey CEO Dave Goldberg told ZDNet that given the strong demand for feedback and data intelligence among Australian businesses, it was a logical decision to open up a local office — the largest international investment the company has made outside of the US and Europe to date.

"I think for us, Australia is one our best markets, after the UK and US. Per capita, it's better than the US. One in 10 Australians take a SurveyMonkey every month and we appreciate that. We'll also be launching our new products and we want to have people on the ground for that," he said.

Goldberg went on and said that government agencies make up a majority of the company's customers in Australia, in comparison to the US where it's non-profit agencies.

"I think it's a great sign Australian people want to collect data and use it to make decisions," he said.

"Both companies and government use it here, as well as the education and non-profit sectors. People want to understand how others feel about things and surveying them is a very broad way to get that information. In fact, Australia more so than any other big English speaking country is ahead of the game in using data."

The new office is expected to create around 25 jobs over the next few years.

As part of the office opening, Australia will be the first country outside of the US to have access the full range of SurveyMonkey products, including Enterprise, Audience, and Contribute.

SurveyMonkey Enterprise has been designed to enable businesses to buy multiple accounts and collaborate the data  collected from each. Some Australian clients that have already signed to the platform include the Department of Industry, WA Public Transport Authority, Open Colleges, and Insurance Australia Group.

SurveyMoneky Audience, which will be available in Australia in July, will enable businesses to receive answers from a pool of targeted respondents. Currently, the pool has several million of people in over 50 countries.

SurveyMonkey adds to the growing list of technology companies that are opening up in Australia. Just last month, Dropbox opened its first Australian office in Sydney.
