Swedish appeal delays Assange's release
Swedish authorities have decided to appeal against a judge's decision to grant bail to Wikileaks editor Julian Assange, who faces extradition to Sweden for questioning on sex-crimes charges.
The lodging of the appeal came on Tuesday, just hours after the bail decision in City of Westminster Magistrates Court in London.
Assange, who has been held for a week at Wandsworth Prison during the legal battle, will remain in custody there until the appeal hearing in high court. That hearing is expected to take place before Friday.
Even if he wins against the appeal, Assange will not be released until the £200,000 in security required under his bail conditions is deposited with the court. However, Assange's lawyer Mark Stephens has pointed out that payment by cheque would call for the Wikileaks editor to stay incarcerated while cheques cleared.
Several high-profile backers have stepped forward to offer financial support, with some suggesting that there is a connection between the legal pursuit of Assange and the ongoing publication by Wikileaks of hundreds of confidential US cables.
