in brief A security scanner that lost power in terminal two of Sydney's domestic airport is to blame for yesterday's delays that affected thousands of passengers.

"Due to a security screening device losing power at Sydney Domestic Airport Terminal 2 [yesterday] afternoon which required the clearing and re-screening of all passengers in the terminal, all carriers' operations including Jetstar's have been significantly disrupted," discount airline Jetstar said today in a statement.

Jetstar said that the loss of power is "extremely regrettable", having delayed over 2000 passengers on flights to Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. Stranded passengers were offered overnight accommodation by the airline. Arriving flights were held on the tarmac to ensure no threat to security inside the terminal, and while the issue is out of Jetstar's control, it is set to work with Sydney Airport security to ensure the issue doesn't happen again, it said.

Virgin Blue also experienced significant delays and told ZDNet Australia today in a statement that it also accommodated its customers stranded by the outage. Virgin Blue said that many of its flights were cancelled yesterday, but is offering no specific numbers at this stage.
