If they do spin off the Nook, buying a Nook or Nook ebook might be a pretty risky bet. If they go under, you might not be able to read the books you've paid for, when your Nook breaks.
Amazon can afford to subsidize the Kindle for ever, of course. Both Amazon and BN are losing money on the physical hardware, and maybe on ebooks too, right now.
