In a crowded market, the Blackberry was the one distinctive offering; a different way of operating. Here in the UK, the 'crackberry' nickname is well deserved, with business and consumer users fiercely loyal. It seems odd they they'd throw away that distinctiveness to end up a tiddler in a pool full of sharks.
Frankly, I believe they are doomed to a slow decline whatever they do - but if they wanted one last shot at survival, it seems to me that they'd keep their keyboard, keep their business-friendly approach (still in advance of all competitors), but do all that on the Android platform, giving themselves the best of both worlds.
They could not use the windows platform, as M$'s control freakery would prevent them from doing their own thing, and Apple is closed to all; so Android was their best and only hope.
RIP RIM
