It's against the generally accepted rules of academic and authoring ethics, and the rules of every reputable school, but it's not against the law of the land. Copyright violation is; plaigiarism is not.
That said, search engines work both ways. If they can point users to illegally published materials, then they can point law enforcement to those very same materials.
