I can't understand it either. There are too many posts on TechCrunch nowadays it is hard as a reader to keep up. And many of them are on topics that really don't grab my interest.
I tried to prove that audience participation was on the fall using comments as a metric of this. But I didn't see a THAT significant decrease. Pre-Marshall about 46 comments/post and after 38 comments/post. Since there are a huge volume of posts this difference may be enough to assert a conclusion I am not sure.
It will be interesting to check the same stat next month I think.
