It would appear that it is not their basic philosophy (making source available without FSF's Software Communism strings) that is the problem, but their implementation: they did not take the right measures to protect it = Trademarks.
Now there might have been a philosophical objection to such action, and if so, that is a problem, bacause it clearly failed (by mere fact of a couple of minor players making a minor variation and it's under threat = not very stable).
