Does anyone remember Apple's OpenDoc? Conceptually, it allows a non-technical user to combine the best and favorite features from various OpenDoc-compliant apps, and make an app that does just what they want. Take the spreadsheet from Excel, add the great spell checker from SurfWriter, and integrate that great mail hander from Em@iler. That's the concept, at least. Apple reported strong developer support, and the stage was set for a resounding success.
You don't remember OpenDoc? That's because it died, long, long before it became a real product.
Now I'm not saying that Mashups will follow the same path as OpenDoc. I'm just much less excited than the author of this article in my belief that Mashups will become the Next Big Thing.
