I remember "Open Doc" from IBM.

Too bad it was destroyed by the Microsoft monopoly. If memory serves correctly, IBM, Apple, and several other companies tried to push "Open Doc", but Microsoft's monopoly in the OEM distribution field allowed Microsoft to successfully overcome it with another inferior product.
